Yuya Yanagi (Junichi Dragons) threw a nine-inning no-hitter. But he didn’t get the win.

Yanagi started the 2023 Nippon Professional Baseball Hiroshima Toyo Carp at the Banterrin Dome in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan, on Wednesday and pitched nine innings without allowing a run or a hit, walking three and striking out five.

In the top of the first inning, Yanagi was in trouble. Hiroshima leadoff hitter Kaito Kozono reached on a throwing error by Ryuk. He walked Takayoshi Noma, but got Takashi Uemoto to fly out to center. However, with runners on first and second, he induced Ryoma Nishikawa to fly out to end the threat.

After getting out of the early jam, Yanagi immediately settled down. He didn’t leave a runner on base until the sixth inning. He faced 15 batters and struck out three. He gave up a leadoff single to Noma in the top of the seventh. Uemoto followed with a single to put runners on first and second. But he struck out Nishikawa to end the threat. He then got Ryosuke Kikuchi to fly out to shortstop to end the threat.

After getting out of the eighth inning with a triple play, Yanagi took the mound in the top of the ninth. He got leadoff hitter Kosuke Tanaka to ground out to second base. He then got Kozono to fly out to shortstop. With two outs, he gave up a walk to Noma, but got Uemoto to fly out to center field. It was a no-hitter in the ninth inning. However, the Junichi offense was unable to capitalize on the Hiroshima mound. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. The game went to extra innings.

Junichi did not bring up Yanagi in the top of the 10th. Martinez, a foreign pitcher, took over. Yanagi was unable to record a no-hitter.

With two outs, Martinez gave up a run-scoring home run to Shota Tobayashi. But in the bottom of the 10th inning, Junichi got a thrilling comeback. They took advantage of a change in pitcher Takuya Yasaki. Takaya Ishikawa led off with a home run to tie the game. Shingo Usami followed with a back-to-back, walk-off home run to make it a 2-1 Junichi victory.

After the game, Junichi head coach Kazuyoshi Tatsunami said, “I hope the batting staff definitely felt something about Yanagi not getting the win,” adding, “We’ve had less run support in Yanagi’s starts this season. Next time, please connect (with runs).”

“We had Martinez there. You don’t want to make bad predictions, but there was a part of me that thought, ‘Will the no-hitter into the ninth inning carry over into the next inning?

“It’s my first no-hitter,” Yanagi said. I didn’t think I could achieve it. I’m grateful to the manager,” and “The fans’ support gave me strength. I’m grateful, and I’ll try to do it again next time.” 꽁머니지급
