There is a cloud hanging over Manchester United’s forward line.

“We have concluded our internal investigation into Mason Greenwood. Following the conclusion of the investigation, it has been mutually agreed that Mason Greenwood will leave the club.”

“While Mr. Greenwood did not commit the offenses with which he was originally charged, he nevertheless made a mistake for which he must take responsibility,” the statement continued.

The parties also said their goodbyes. “I grew up learning that violence and abuse are wrong,” Greenwood said on social media.

“I have been cleared of all charges, but I accept that I made a mistake. The best decision for everyone is to leave the club and move on with my career.”

Greenwood was a highly anticipated prospect for the club and its fans. He came through the United youth ranks and was touted as the future of the club when he made his first-team debut in 2019.

His progression has exceeded expectations. His 19 goals in the 19/20 season set him apart, followed by 12 goals in the 20/21 season, indicating a bright future.

United were delighted with Greenwood’s performance. With Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial underperforming at the time, Greenwood’s rise was a bright spot in the United attack.

The only thing standing between Greenwood and a bright future at United was his personal life. In January, Greenwood was arrested and charged with sexual assault and threats against his girlfriend.

A police investigation was immediately launched. The club also launched its own investigation. As a result of the investigation, the club banned Greenwood from playing and training.

The club began preparing for the possibility that Greenwood would not return. They tried to fill the void by signing Jadon Sancho and Anthony in 2021 and 2022 for €85 million and €95 million respectively.
