‘Free agent’ Choi warms up for season-ending return…goes 3-for-4 with multi-hit game in first rehab game

The El Paso Chihuahuas (San Diego’s Triple-A affiliate) went 2-for-3 with a walk and a hit in a game against the Round Rock Express (Houston Astros’ Triple-A affiliate) in the 2023 Minor League Pacific Coast League (PCL) at Southwest University Park in El Paso, Texas, on June 6 (PT).

In his first at-bat, Choi singled straight to second base. However, in his second at-bat, he managed to get on base. In the bottom of the third inning, with the bases loaded, he hit Cole Wynn’s curveball for a double. Brandon Dixon and Tirso Ornelas then walked to load the bases.

With the score tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the fourth, Choi drew a walk to lead off the inning with runners on first and second. Dixon followed with a two-run single to center field to put El Paso back on top.

In the bottom of the fifth, Choi singled in the fourth run of the inning on a 95.2 mph (153 km/h) four-seam fastball from Mark Church. Choi’s hit put runners on first and second, but Dixon grounded out to third.

Choi, who is set to become a free agent, has been hampered by a series of injuries this season. An Achilles tendon injury early in the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates landed him on the disabled list (IL), and he returned to the big leagues before the All-Star break.

Choi was traded to San Diego at the trade deadline, where he was paired with Ha-Sung Kim. However, about two weeks after his arrival, he was sidelined again with a rib injury.

Choi’s major league numbers this season are 15 hits, six home runs, 11 RBIs, 12 runs scored, a .179 batting average and a .679 OPS in 30 games. With the end of the regular season just around the corner, he’ll need to prove his worth quickly.
