The South Korean women’s national volleyball team (ranked 36th in the world) was swept by Italy (ranked fifth) in its first match of the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification.
Head coach Cesar Hernández González’s side fell to the Italians in straight sets 0-3 (11-25 20-25 17-25) in the first match of Group C in Łódź, Poland on Sunday (July 17).
The team fell behind by four points at the start of the first set and never recovered, dropping the first set by a large margin.
In the second set, the team took a 3-0 lead thanks to a kill by Bumseul, an open attack by Kwon Min-ji (GS Caltex), and a block by Lee Ju-ah (Heungkuk Life).
However, at 8-5, Bumseul made a series of kills to give up the lead.
At 9-8, a serve error by Park Jung-ah (Pepper Savings Bank) and a reception error by Moon Jeong-won (Korea Expressway Corporation) caused them to fall behind and lose the second set.
Backed into a corner, the Korean team continued to struggle in the third set, falling behind by a large margin.
Kang So-hwi (GS Caltex) was the only Korean player to score in double figures (10 points). Captain Park Jung-ah added six points. 안전놀이터
